BASE COMPENSATION · USD
Surrogate pay ranges, before you use the calculator
These are the illustrative base ranges used in the calculator below, not a guaranteed offer. Base compensation is separate from allowances, additional payments and approved expense reimbursements.
California
- First-time surrogate
- $55,000–$75,000
- Experienced surrogate
- $65,000–$120,000
Other U.S. states
- First-time surrogate
- $50,000–$70,000
- Experienced surrogate
- $65,000–$95,000
The other-state figures are a broad model, not a separate quote for every state. Program availability, eligibility and the final agreement must be confirmed individually.
What the estimate adds—and what stays separate
- Monthly allowance: the model uses $450 × 18 months = $8,100. This is a calculator assumption, not a promised journey length or payment schedule.
- Other modeled allowances: $1,000 for a medication cycle, $1,200 per embryo transfer and $1,000 for maternity clothing. With one transfer, modeled allowances total $11,300; with two, $12,500.
- Optional circumstances: the calculator can model an additional $10,000 for a multiple pregnancy or $7,500 for a C-section. These are examples only, not predictions, medical recommendations or automatic entitlements.
- Reviewed separately: approved medical expenses, travel, childcare, lost wages, insurance and legal support. Reimbursements and support benefits should not be confused with base compensation.
For example, a first-time California surrogate with one modeled transfer has an illustrative base range of $55,000–$75,000, plus $11,300 in modeled allowances: $66,300–$86,300 before optional circumstances. Your written agreement—not this example—sets actual amounts, eligibility and timing.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I earn as a surrogate?
The calculator uses illustrative base ranges of $55,000–$75,000 for first-time surrogates in California and $50,000–$70,000 in other states. Experienced-surrogate ranges are $65,000–$120,000 in California and $65,000–$95,000 elsewhere. These are not guaranteed offers. Allowances, additional payments and approved reimbursements are separate, and actual amounts and timing must be set out in your written agreement.
When do payments begin, and how are they scheduled?
Your payment schedule is defined in your legal agreement. Before medical treatment begins, you’ll review each payment milestone, amount, and expected timing with your attorney and care team.
Will I need to pay anything out of pocket?
Approved journey-related expenses are paid directly or reimbursed as outlined in your agreement. If you’re unsure whether an expense is covered, contact your coordinator before paying.
How are reimbursements handled?
Submit the required receipt or documentation to your care team. Approved expenses are processed according to the reimbursement timeline in your agreement.
Will I still be compensated if an embryo transfer is unsuccessful?
Your agreement explains which milestone payments and approved expenses apply if a transfer does not result in pregnancy. Your care team will review the next steps with you before another transfer is planned.
